- How to get there: From Pokolbin (Hermitage Lodge), drive toward Nulkaba / Lovedale area (approx 20-30 min). The trailhead is near Astills picnic area. Parking is available at the picnic grounds. From Sydney, the drive takes about 2 hours on the way to Pokolbin.
- What is there? The Werakata loop (also called “Deadmans loop”) provides peaceful bushland walking, seasonal wildflowers, and good birdwatching opportunities with species like speckled warblers, kookaburras, and honeyeaters.
Wandering this loop trail, you’ll enjoy a quiet bushland atmosphere – the kind of natural immersion that contrasts beautifully with the cultivated landscapes of vineyards.
Early mornings are especially serene, when bird calls echo among the trees. After your walk, you might linger for a picnic at Astills, or continue onwards to nearby cellar doors or other nature spots.

Mount Bright Lookout

- Signature view: Panoramic valley vistas, mixed bushland vistas, ridge views
- How to get there: From Hermitage Lodge in Pokolbin, drive to the end of McDonalds Road, then continue via Oakey Creek and Mount View Road, before ascending Mount Bright Road to Mount Bright Lookout (approximately 30–40 minutes). From Sydney, the journey takes a little over 2 hours 15 minutes to reach Mount Bright Lookout.
- What is there? This route climbs and meanders across mixed terrain, rewarding you with sweeping views of the Hunter Valley ridge lines. The trail is also used by mountain bikers; dogs are permitted but must be leashed.
Mount Bright walk gives a sense of wilderness just beyond the wine country’s edge. As you ascend, the view gradually opens, allowing you to gaze back across vineyards, undulating hills, and forested ridges. The walk has a satisfying mix of effort and reward.

Broken Back Rd Trail
- Address: Pokolbin State Forest / Broken Back Road region
- Walking time: ~6 h 20 min (for 23.2 km out-and-back)
- Suitable for: Experienced hikers, adventurers, mountain bikers in dry conditions
- Signature view: Trig tower views, sweeping vineyard panoramas, forest ridges
- How to get there: From Hermitage Lodge in Pokolbin, drive into Pokolbin State Forest via McDonalds Road. At the end of the road, turn right onto Broken Back Road to access the trail. (Approximately 30-40 minutes). From Sydney, the drive takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to reach the Broken Back Road Trail.
- What is there? This long trail climbs toward a trig tower vantage point, offering panoramic views over the Hunter Valley. The route is along dirt roads and forest tracks. In dry weather it is rated easy; after rain it becomes more difficult. Free camping is permitted near the summit (no facilities).
This is a full-day commitment but one of the most rewarding long walks in the region. The ascent gradually rewards you with 360° views over vineyard landscapes, forested hills, and distant ridgelines. The solitude and expansive outlooks make it a favorite for serious walkers and photographers.
Nearby, you can combine this walk with picnic stops, mountain biking, or complement the day with cellar door visits. Be prepared with water, navigation, and weather awareness.

Wollombi Brook Nature Trail

Parking is available at trailheads accessible via Wollombi roads. From Sydney, the drive takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours to reach the Wollombi Brook Nature Trail.
- What is there? This trail runs along Wollombi Brook and connects to Yengo and adjoining forest tracks. It offers forest ambiance, creek crossings, birdlife, and quiet bushwalking.
Walking this stretch feels like stepping deeper into regional wilderness. The creek, forest edge vegetation, and occasional glimpses of remnant farmland make for a layered experiential walk. Along the way you might spot birds, native flora, and enjoy the ambient sound of water. This route works well in combination with exploring Wollombi village, local heritage, or linking further into Yengo National Park walks.
Watagans National Park

- Signature view: Rainforest canopy of blackbutts and blue gums, glimpses of valley vistas, historic timber relics.
- How to get there: From Pokolbin (Hermitage Lodge), drive through Nulkaba, Cessnock, and Kitchener, then continue on to Cooranbong (approximately 30-45 minutes). The trail begins at the Boarding House Dam picnic area, where parking is available. And if you are from Sydney, the drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the Watagans National Park trail via Turners Walking Track.
- What is there? Turners Walking Track traverses rainforest and eucalypt forest, passes relics of O’Hara’s sawmill from the 1950s, and connects to features like Monkey Face and Narrow Place lookouts.
This trail offers a lush forest experience, with dappled light filtering through tall gums and ferns underfoot. The steep parts make for a satisfying challenge, and the mix of rainforest and open forest keeps the walk engaging. Portions of the track afford sweeping views toward Hunter Valley and the Barrington Ranges.

Circuit Walking Track

- How to get there: From Pokolbin (Hermitage Lodge), drive north towards Cessnock, then continue through Mulbring and Freemans Waterhole to reach Watagans National Park (a little over an hour). If you are coming from Sydney, take the route to the Circuit Walking Track (about 2 hours), enjoy a day trek, and then head to Hermitage Lodge to relax and retreat in the Hunter Valley.
- What is there? This loop follows creek through rainforest, passing tall trees, undergrowth, and a striking moss-covered rock wall. Visitors may see lyrebirds or kookaburras.
Though short, this walk packs in a serene forest experience, ideal for mornings or as a gentle interlude in a more active day. The atmosphere is cool, dappled, and restful. It’s perfect for photography, a quiet connection with bushland, and pairing with a picnic. In summer, some walkers cool off in the creek before returning.
Turners Walking Track
- Address: Watagans National Park, starting from Boarding House Dam picnic area.

And from Sydney, the drive takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours to reach Turners Walking Track.

Which Trails are Suitable for Beginner Hikers in Hunter Valley?
For beginners, Circuit Walking Track (0.6 km loop) is ideal – gentle, scenic, and shaded. Werakata loop (8.7 km) is moderate but manageable with rest stops and slower pace. Avoid longer or steep tracks like Broken Back unless conditioned for longer walks.
